The economic and energy efficiencies of GCC states: A DEA approach Mohammad Imdadul Haque
The six GCC states share similar economic, geographic and socio-cultural characteristics and also face with similar challenges in terms of energy perspective. This study plans to focus on the economic and energy efficiency of the six GCC states. In the process, the study ranks the GCC states in terms of their efficiency scores. These efficiencies are computed through Data Envelopment Analysis. The economic efficiency is calculated for all six GCC states. Capital and labor are the inputs and GDP is the output. In this survey, Saudi Arabia maintains the highest efficiency score of 0.94, closely followed by Qatar (0.92), Kuwait (0.89), Bahrain (0.83), Oman (0.81) and UAE (0.67). There is a huge gap between the economic efficiency scores of Saudi Arabia and UAE. The environmental efficiency scores are calculated using CO2 emissions as output and electric power consumption and energy as input. Again, the highest efficiency score is for Saudi Arabia (0.91) followed by Oman (0.87), Kuwait and Bahrain have a tie for the 3rd position with a score of 0.74. Finally, the laggards are UAE (0.65) and Qatar (0.62). Again, there is a huge gap between the best and the worst performers. The case of two countries is worth mentioning. Qatar is ranked second in terms of economic efficiency while it was ranked sixth in terms of economic efficiency. Oman was ranked fifth in terms of economic efficiency while it was ranked second in terms of environmental efficiency. Finally, an average of economic and environmental efficiency are taken...
Oil exports and economic growth: An empirical evidence from Saudi Arabia Mohammad Imdadul Haque

Being an oil-based economy, the economic prosperity of Saudi Arabia to a large extent depends upon the international price of crude oil. A substantial portion of public revenue which determine the economic activities of the government comes from oil exports. Oil exports are also important for earning the foreign exchange to fulfill the import requirements of the country. Hence any disturbance in this sector is likely to affect the entire economy of Saudi Arabia. This paper applies Johansen cointegration method to establish long run relationship of economic growth with oil exports, imports and government consumption expenditure. The study finds that economic growth has a positive long run relationship with oil exports, and consumption expenditure of the government. Further, there is a negative long run association between imports and economic growth. Finally, the study recommends regulating imports and intensive efforts to diversify economic base in import substituting industries.

Cointegration and Causality between Economic Growth, Government Sector and Private Sector in Saudi Arabia Mohammad Imdadul Haque
In an age when oil prices are abysmally low, an important element for sustaining the growth of an oil-dependent economy like Saudi Arabia is to minimize the role of government sector and to encourage the growth of private sector. In fact, this is an important aspect of economic diversification. Empirical studies on analysing the relationship between government sector, private sector and economic growth is missing for Saudi Arabia. Using Johansen test of cointegration for the period 1970-2015, this study finds out that the three variables are cointegrated for Saudi Arabia. The study further indicates that there is a long-run causality running from both government sector and private sector to gross domestic product. This causality is missing in the short run. Finally, the study recommends re-structuring the salaries and taxation in the private sector. ...
Determinants of Economic Growth in Saudi Arabia: An Economic Analysis using Vector Error Correction (VEC) Model Mohammad Imdadul Haque

Saudi Arabia is one of the major oil producing and exporting countries of the world. In recent years, it has been taking measures to diversify its economy. It has also been spending a lot on education in recent years. Under this situation, it is important to analyze and determine what are the major factors that impact Saudi Arabia's economic growth? Econometric analysis using co-integration shows a long-run equilibrium relationship between gross domestic product as dependent variable and three variables namely gross fixed capital formation, exports and imports as explanatory variables. Moreover, estimated long-run relationship shows that while gross fixed capital formation and exports boost up gross domestic product, imports cause a fall in it in the long-run. Public expenditure on education does not have any significant impact on gross domestic product. The results of Vector Error Correction Model validates that there is a long-run equilibrium relationship between the above mentioned four variables in Saudi Arabia. Granger Causality/Block Erogeneity Wald Tests show that gross fixed capital formation and exports cause growth ingross domestic product in the short-run as well.

Telecommunication Sector of Saudi Arabia: Internal and External Analysis Mohammad Imdadul Haque

Telecommunication sector plays a vital role in development of any economy. This study takes a holistic approach of studying the sales, financial performance, customer satisfaction and service quality. A comparative study of the three major telecom service providers is planned here. Financial performance of service providers indicates STC as the best, while Zain currently has the highest net sales. Overall customer satisfaction is much lower in the telecommunication sector. Also, customers' perception about the quality of service is lower than the expectations in terms of all the dimensions of SERVQUAL. But, the results indicate that there is neither any significant difference between the satisfaction of customers from their respective service providers nor there is any significant difference between aspects of service quality of different service providers. This is both a problem and opportunity for this sector. Increasing quality of services would lead to increase in customer satisfaction and finally increase sales and profits.

Farmers' Sensitivity to Crop Loss: Evidence From India Mohammad Imdadul Haque

This study analyses farmer's sensitivity to crop yield loss in India. The four prominent reasons identified are: drought; disease; natural causes and others, among which drought appears to be the major issue. The farmers who had small landholdings and lacked irrigation facilities, assets, credit and technical guidance were more at loss. The crop loss severity and its region at agro-ecosystem level has also been analysed and it was found that across all ecosystems, arid area experiences more crop loss followed by rainfed, costal, irrigated and hills & mountain. Arid and rainfed agro-ecosystems are worse hit by inadequate rainfall and while coastal and hills & mountain are more risky due to insect/disease/animal. In case of irrigated ecosystem both inadequate rainfall and insect/disease/animal come out as credible threat and emerge as major reasons for crop loss. Insurance could be one possible ways to mitigate the impact of climate change on agriculture.

Economic security and sustainability through social entrepreneurship: The current Saudi scenario s.manakkattil

Economic security of each country is determined by array of different factors. Some factors seem obvious and are measurable, while other factors, such as entrepreneurship and, especially social entrepreneurship, are tacit and hard to measure. Anyway, social entrepreneurship is accepted globally as a bridge between business and benevolence. It attempts to find solution to local sustainability issues that are normally not addressed by traditional organizations. The problems faced by the Middle East society in general and Saudi Arabia in particular is unique in nature. Most of such problems cannot be addressed by the Government or the traditional organisations. The utility of social entrepreneurship arises here. There are many social enterprises in Saudi Arabia that have succeeded in nurturing a band of new leaders who are attempting to enhance the region's global competitiveness, with a social touch. The present paper presents a few social entrepreneurs who have made their mark in Saudi society, and provides suggestions for nurturing and sustaining social entrepreneurships.

Using Johnson’s approach of cointegration, this study finds that exports and imports converge towards equilibrium in the long run implying that the trade policy is being managed well as per its comparative advantage and there is both long run and short run causality running from exports to import. This study prominently improves upon the results of the only other study on Saudi Arabia (to the author’s best of knowledge) by including the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM). Application of a three dimensional model for effective Knowledge Transfer from Higher Education Institutions to business firms in KSA Abdul Malik Syed
The distribution of knowledge in society has long been a focus of academic attention. Knowledge transfer is a prime objective of both higher education institutions and research institutions, and all work hard to establish research links with companies in all fields of manufacturing and commerce. Industry, too, has realised that there is more to a university than a source of fresh graduates. Higher education has the research knowledge and resources a firm needs to compete effectively. The present study adapts the knowledge transfer model developed in USA to examine the influence of academic community (read as western management ideas) on the management practice of business organizations in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Although the study is limited in its scope, we hope the results will provide some evidence of the degree to which the academic discipline of management shapes decisions of practicing managers in KSA. ...

Benchmarking Financial Performance of Saudi Banks using Regression Mohammad Imdadul Haque

Assessing the health of an economy can be accomplished by studying the financial  performance of its banks. The hypotheses tested imply that there are significant differences  amongst Saudi banks. The financial performance of banks in Saudi Arabia is studied on the  basis of financial variables and ratios through the help of Spearmans' rank correlation  method. Although, benchmarking performance of banks is done using advanced linear  programming models, this study attempts to develop an efficiency frontier on the basis of  simple linear regression. Albeit certain restrictive assumptions, this study identifies Al Rajhi  bank to be the best bank to which other banks could look up to and justifies this model on the  basis of parsimony.  ...

Using Johnson's cointegration methodology the study found the presence of a long term relationship between investment, exports and the economic growth of India. The study further shows that only domestic investment significantly contributes to economic growth both in the long run and in the short run. The export, though, has positive relation with economic growth, its contribution has not been found to be significant. The policy implication is that India should continue to focus on domestic investment while diversifying investment towards promoting export sector through investments in infrastructure. ...
